The name “Kawamichi” has a history of more than 100 years in Oita area. The Kawamichi Shoten house was used as a hut for fishermen’s nets. It was later refurbished to become a store that sells tobacco and sundries. In the Showa era, 1926-1989 , the name was known as tobacco shop by the people around.
Our grandmother came from the neighboring city to our town and got mariied our grandfather and lived until the age of 93 as the owner of this tobacco shop. This store hasn’t been used since my grandmother passed away. My family sometimes use this vacant store as a warehouse. It’s been four years since my grandmother passed away, and the shutters have gotten old. However, I didn’t want to lose the long-standing name of Kawamichi, so I wanted to revive this vacant store and use it to rent kimonos and sell remakes of kimonos.
I asked my mother “I wanted to use the store” many times, but I received a reply from her “it could not be used as a store”. No matter how many times I ask, my mother doesn’t shake her head vertically. I asked her repeatedly for three years, but I couldn’t get permission to use the store, so I started thinking about giving up using this store and looking for another place.
In early September 2020, a big typhoon hit Kyushu. The typhoon blew off the dilapidated shutters at the entrance to the Kawamichi store. Since the place where this shop is located is a small port town, the sea breeze is always blowing, so it is essential to put a shutter on the house. My mother decided to replace the old and typhoon-broken shutter with a new one. And finally, the entrance to Kawamichi Shoten has been reborn!
川道商店の「川道」という名前は屋号で、大分市佐賀関半島で100年以上の歴史があります。 現在の川道商店として使われていた店舗は、60年ほど前まで漁師の編立 （海の沖合に網を縦に降ろして浮かせ漁をする方法） の小屋として、網を収納保管したり整備したりする場所として使われていました。 その後、編立の仕事を縮小し、タバコや日用雑貨を販売する店に改装されました。 昭和の時代、周りの人からは、川道と言えばたばこ屋、として知られていました。
祖母は隣町の出身で、祖父と結婚し、このタバコ屋の所有者として93歳まで住んでいました。 祖母が亡くなって以来、この店は使われていません。 家族は時々この空いている店を倉庫として使っています。 祖母が亡くなり、シャッターが古くなってから4年が経とうとしています。私は、川道という名前を継承したかったのと、着物の文化を広めるために、この空き店舗を復活させて、着物のレンタルやリメイクの販売に利用したいと思いました。
そこで私は、店を相続した母に何度もそこを使わせてほしいと頼みましたが、お店としては使えない、と返ってくるのが常でした。何度頼んでも母は首を縦に振りません。3年間、繰り返し頼んだのですが、店舗の使用許可は得られず、この店舗を使うことは あきらめて別の場所を探すことを考えるようになりました。
2020年9月上旬、九州を非常に勢力の大きな台風が襲いました。 その台風は、川道商店の入口の老朽化したシャッターを吹き飛ばしていきました。この店がある集落は、港町であるためいつも潮風が吹いています。住居を潮風から守るために雨戸やシャッターを付けることが欠かせません。ようやく母は、老朽化して台風で壊れたシャッターを新しいシャッターに付け替えることを決心しました。そして、ついに、川道商店の入り口が生まれ変わったのです！
